Leura Harvest Festival speakers tell how to live sustainably

Learn how to live subsistently on a quarter-acre block, keep bees, how artisanal textile is conceived and produced, brew your own beer and lots more from expert speakers at this year's Leura Harvest Festival on Sunday, May 3.

The Leura Village Association (LVA) event will feature eight specialist topics presented in a conversational format to encourage closer audience interaction. This year's headline speaker is festival ambassador Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa executive chef Jason Martin.

Also on the program is high profile dietician Kay Ridgway in conversation with eastern medicine practitioner Stephen Phillips and tireless healthy lifestyle advocate & Slow Food Blue Mountains convenor Anne Elliott. Oberon truffle farmers Col and Sue Roberts, and Micro brewer Rob Dalglish from Leura Cellars will also engage in audience conversation.

LVA president and festival organiser Barry Jarrott said: ``The speakers program was one of the highlights of last year's inaugural festival, which is an encouraging sign that people want to learn more about sustainable living, how to lessen their impact on the environment and how to live a more healthy lifestyle.

``Our speakers this year are field leaders in sustainability from our own Greater Blue Mountains community, who will impart knowledge that locals and visitors can apply in their own backyards, kitchens and bodies.''

Also at the festival for the speakers program are: Woodford Honey owner Lyle Clinton, high profile textile designer and manufacturer Denise Lithgow who has a long-term connection to the Blue Mountains and Central West, and Marni O'Mara and husband Pat who live subsistently on a quarter-acre block in Katoomba.

Leura Garage owner James Howarth and First Farm Organics supplier Fabrice Rolando will talk about how their close collaboration brings delicious, nutritious dishes to diners of the funky Leura noshery.

 Set among the famous cherry trees of Leura Mall, Leura Harvest Festival will showcase all facets of sustainable living including outstanding regional produce, handmade and recycled items, to the latest clever initiatives in the Blue Mountains and wider region.

Other highlights will include regional wine and beer tastings, jam-making and knitting competitions, the traditional art of wool spinning, the reinvention of the iconic Australian lamington, a chook show and dozens of stalls exhibiting sustainable, organic and locally grown food and produce, clean energy.

The second Leura Harvest Festival has received funding from the NSW Department of Premier and State Cabinet's 2014 Bushfire Recovery Grant. The festival theme is ``connecting the community''.

The event will celebrate food from a 100 mile radius and promote recycling and repurposing and encourage visitors to notice and immerse themselves in the magnificent Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area location around them.
