Thailand is ready to showcase its sporting excellence as nearly 2,400 athletes from 43 Asian countries are arriving in Phuket for the 4th Asian Beach Games, which will feature 26 sports and kick off this Friday and run until 23 November.
After months of preparation to host one of the region’s most important sporting events, Phuket received the royal flame of the 4th Asian Beach Games on Monday (10 November) and held a flame torch run on Tuesday in Patong and Kathu Municipalities. The flag-raising ceremony of the Games was also held on Tuesday at the Saphan Hin Sports Centre.
The atmosphere in Phuket downtown and at all six venues – Patong Beach, Karon Beach, Nai Yang Beach, Bang Niao Dam, Chaofa Mine and Saphan Hin – has become very bustling because athletes and officials started arriving in Thailand’s largest island and top tourist destination, according to the Games’ official newsroom.
The gold medal hunt starts today (12 November) with four sporting events comprising Sambo, Yuyitsu, Flag Football and squash. The Flag football competition takes place at the Saphan Hin Sports Centre, Sambo and squash at Karon Beach, and Yuyitsu at Patong Beach. A total of 12 gold medals are on offer, consisting of six gold medals apiece in Sambo and Yuyitsu.
The opening ceremony will take place on 14 November at the Saphan Hin Sports Centre. Privy Councillor and the Royal Representative General Surayud Chulanont will preside over the event while Olympic Council of Asia President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah will attend as the guest of honour.
