Textile Tours of Sri Lanka and West Timor

Australian soft adventure agency, Active Travel, is offering two new textile-themed tours in June and July, 2015, one to West Timor and the other to Sri Lanka, both guided by Australian experts in textiles and techniques.

The 15-day ‘West Timor Textiles and Culture’ tour will explore some of the area’s most beautiful textiles, which are all woven on back-strap looms in traditional village settings, and will be led by Dr Ruth Hadlow, who lectures at a number of Australian universities on the subject of textile techniques of West Timor, Flores and Sumba. Assisting Ruth on the tour is her husband, Willy Kadati, who works as a freelance consultant, guide and translator.

A destination largely untouched by tourists, West Timor features markets full of produce and textiles, village weaving cooperatives and remote villages. As Active Travel’s tour guides have close relationships with the communities, travellers will be received as guests into people’s homes, enabling unique interactions with local people and their culture.

The tour starts on June 5, 2015, and costs from $A3959, per person, twin-share, which includes all accommodation in hotels, guesthouses and home stays, sightseeing, transport, guide, entrance fees, two domestic flights and 22 meals. Return flights from Australia are additional. A solo supplement of $A398 is also available.

The 18-day ‘Tea and Textiles of Sri Lanka’ tour aims to introduce guests to the variety and style of Sri Lankan textiles and crafts as well as the country’s history and lifestyle. The tour is hosted by Cresside Collette, originally from Sri Lanka, who has had vast experience exhibiting and tutoring in textiles and design throughout Australia.

Featuring visits to commercial textile studies, a traditional tea plantation, a spice farm, private textile collections, as well as ancient temples, monasteries, cities, fortresses and UNESCO heritage sites, the tour begins on July 5, 2015, and costs from $A6112 per person, twin-share, including all accommodation, transfers, sightseeing, entrance fees and selected meals, with a solo supplement of $A2096 available. Return flights from Australia are additional.

Flights from Australia for both tours can be booked through Active Travel. Conditions apply and fares are subject to availability.
